The Heyvaert-Heynen Photography Program

The Heyvaert-Heynen Photography Program is an opportunity to introduce HMI youth to photography and visual journalism, and provide them techniques to express themselves through photographic, written, and audio narratives.

Over the course of three nine week cycles the young people will explore how LGBTQ images in society reflect their own experience and communities and engage in discussions regarding the impact these images have on them and their peers in regards to self identification and acceptance, self esteem and the effect these images have on their ability to make HIV/STI preventative decisions.

Each young person is given a digital camera to complete a series of photographic assignments, designed to teach them specific functions of the camera and to strengthen their visual acuity. The assignments will lead up to each member of the group choosing a personal photography project, which he or she will pursue independently. This project will highlight a social issue in a member’s life or community.

Each cycle will culminate with a Gallery Exhibition showcasing the youths work.

Robert Heyvaert and
Bart Heynen

Robert Heyvaert and Bart Heynen are partners from Belgium who, during one of their frequent visits to the United States made the time for a formal introduction to HMI. They immediately connected with HMI’s work with at-risk LGBTQ youth and the HMI young people.

The energy of the youth demonstrated to Rob and Bart that HMI thrives on love and humanity in a safe, stimulating space while producing life altering results. Having overcome many obstacles in their own lives in Europe it was quite a shocking experience to learn about the number of American youth in New York City in crisis because of their sexual identity or orientation. They were moved to get involved.

Sparked by their own passions for photography, Rob and Bart were so inspired by the opportunity to reinvigorate the photography program that they generously donated and attached themselves to HMI in a way that furthers the mission and will leave their legacy forever imprinted on the organization and the young lives they will touch.

“Bart’s passion and life expression is through photography. The opportunity to re-establish the photography program …provides exactly the channel for expression that we consider an honor and privilege to witness.”

HMI is deeply appreciative of their support.
