Since its founding, the Hetrick-Martin Institute has grown from a small, volunteer-led grass-roots advocacy organization into a leading professional provider of social support and programming for at-risk lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) youth. HMI youth members, ranging in age from 12 to 24, come from over 300 zip codes throughout all of New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area. They are of all colors and sizes, come from all kinds of backgrounds, and their enthusiasm and creativity is boundless.
HMI is also the host agency for the groundbreaking Harvey Milk High School, devoted to serving at-risk youth and founded in 1985 in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, which administers the school and is responsible for admissions. MORE
Our dynamic After-School programs continually excel in educational initiatives, arts activities, health and wellness awareness, and job-preparedness training.
Our Supportive Services Department offers tailored individual, group, and family counseling to help youth come to terms with their sexuality and find emotional stability and resilience.
Our Staff of high-caliber professionals — teachers, counselors, and administrators — makes it all possible, which is why HMI is the go-to provider and community-based partner for those who care about the future of our youth.
Our Outreach programs involve community-based organizations to provide wraparound services for LGBTQ youth, as well as training and consultation services to share our specialized knowledge of the youth community with others.
Our Board Of Directors is a diverse group of concerned community leaders committed to the ideals and results that Hetrick-Martin embodies. They work in such varied industries as finance, fashion, media, youth services and academia.
