Hetrick-Martin Institute Appoints Thomas Krever

as New Executive Director

Nation’s Oldest Advocacy Organization for LGBTQ Youth to Remain Focused on Providing Critical Services, Support and Education to At-Risk Young People

New York, NYThe Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School, is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Krever to the position of Executive Director. Mr. Krever previously served as the agency’s Deputy Executive Director for two years after joining Hetrick-Maetin  in 2003 as the Associate Executive Director of Programs. In his new role, Mr. Krever will oversee the general operations of the agency and will continue to be responsible for the overall management and design of Hetrick-Martin’s After-school programs.

Hetrick-Martin Board co-chair E. O’Brien Kelley said, “We are confident that Thomas’ extensive experience in community building and mobilization, as well as his in-depth knowledge of our agency, our young people and the award-winning programs we provide, will enable us to respond effectively to the growing need we are seeing for our services from disenfranchised youth both in and around New York City and beyond. His commitment to helping all young people - regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity - believe in themselves and pursue a bright future is both inspiring and empowering to the youth we serve.”

Board co-chair Bert M. Petersen, MD, added, “We are excited by Thomas’ enthusiasm to carry on our legacy of stellar programming and serve as the voice of our young people to continue raising awareness about the many challenges this vulnerable segment of the population faces on a daily basis. We look forward to working closely with Thomas to expand the scope of the critical and innovative services we provide to the thousands of LGBTQ young people served by HMI each year.”

Mr. Krever said, “Throughout my career, I have worked hard to create opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential and build an infrastructure that helps even the most at-risk individuals seize those opportunities. So it is a real honor for me, as well as a privilege, to assume the mantle of leadership at an agency that has such a outstanding history of providing a safe and supportive environment for all young people to thrive and flourish – regardless of their sexual orientation or identity.” He continued, “My vision for the future of Hetrick-Martin is to work hand-in-hand with our board, our amazing donor network and the broader community to ensure that the agency remains a safe haven of tolerance, acceptance, education and opportunity in New York City. I also hope to broaden our reach so that young people living elsewhere can benefit from many of the same excellent programs and services that we currently provide here.”

In his prior role as Hetrick-Martin’s Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Krever was responsible for acquiring public funds for the agency’s programs and managing Hetrick-Martin’s relationships with private donors and community partners. He was also the author of the first “Comprehensive Education Plan” to establish the Harvey Milk High School, which resides on the same premises as Hetrick-Martin and which is supported in partnership by the agency, as a diploma-granting high school. Before joining Hetrick-Martin, Mr. Krever worked at the Council for Unity for 12 years, where he began as a Field Director and eventually became a Vice President.

Mr. Krever speaks frequently on topics related to HIV education and tolerance and, as a community trainer, has worked with a wide variety of groups and organizations including the United States Center for Disease Control, the New York City Police Department and the AIDS Institute. He graduated from Brooklyn College with a BFA in Dance Performance and received a Master’s in Public Administration from Baruch College. He also holds a Certificate in Non-Profit Business Management from Hofstra University. Mr. Krever is a lifelong resident of Brooklyn.
